There’s a reason Cynthia Bringle received the North Carolina Award for Fine Art in 2002 before being recognized in 2009 as a North Carolina Living Treasure. She’s beloved not only as a potter whose work can be found in museums and individual collections around the country, but as a teacher, and mentor, too. She is passionate about creating work that people appreciate as well as use. A lifelong learner, she continually looks at her work with a critical eye, wondering how to take it to the next level.
Teresa Pietsch work connects both the functional and the decorative, seeking to make pots that people want to touch, hold, and use. Finding inspiration from plants and trees, her pots reflect ideas that are centered in life, growth, and experience.
Teresa grew up in Washington State and graduated from Seattle Pacific University. She began working in clay at West Point Grey Community Studio in Vancouver, BC and at Claymakers Community Studio in Durham, NC. In 2010 she started as a full time studio potter as a resident artist at the EnergyXchange in Burnsville, NC. In the fall of 2013 she set up her own studio near Penland, NC.
Susan became a core student at Penland in 1998 and 1999. While a part of their ceramics program, she also took printmaking and papermaking classes. In 2000 I moved to Athens, Georgia, finally got the newspaper paste-up job she had always wanted, shared a rented studio with a friend in Farmington, and assisted and taught beginning clay classes at Good Dirt Ceramic Center. We all know this is not a great time in history for newspapers and especially for paste-up artists. Her job was replaced by computer software in 2004 and that same year she left Athens to attend graduate school in ceramics at the University of Florida. One of her greatest experiences as a graduate student at UF was teaching someone how to use a typewriter. After graduating in 2007, she returned to Penland as the clay studio coordinator.
He was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts in 2000-2001, and has returned to Penland to teach Summer Session workshops. Currently, Ronan maintains Nine Toes Pottery, which produces highly decorative and functional earthenware vessels. His work has been featured in both Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times, and the books 500 Bowls and 500 Plates and Chargers.
